In this blog post, I will share our expertise and provide tips on how to optimize your work from home experience, increase your productivity, and achieve your goals. Whether you’re new to remote work or looking to enhance your current setup, our insights can help you make the most out of working from home.
An important first step to being more productive while working from home is identifying your distractions. These are some common work from home distractions:
- Family members or roommates: The presence of family members or roommates can be a significant distraction, particularly if they are noisy or require attention. Even if they are working from home as well their work style may be different than yours.
- Social media and the internet: It’s easy to fall down a rabbit hole of social media or other online activities, leading to a loss of focus and productivity. This can be especially true if your work requires you to be on social media.
- Household chores: When working from home, it can be tempting to multitask and try to fit in household chores or other personal tasks during work hours. There are some things like throwing in a load of laundry that may not be too distracting but it’s easy to fall into just doing task after task and not get back to work when you need to.
- Pets: While pets can provide comfort and companionship, they can also be a distraction and require attention, leading to a loss of focus.
- TV and streaming services: It’s easy to get sucked into binge-watching a TV series or streaming service, leading to a loss of focus and productivity. Some people can watch something while working and just have it on in the background but that’s not going to work for everyone.
- Noise and other environmental factors: Whether it’s construction noise outside or a neighbor’s barking dog, environmental factors can be a significant distraction and make it challenging to concentrate.
By identifying these common distractions, you can take steps to minimize their impact and optimize your work from home productivity.
Tips for Mastering Work from Home Productivity
Create a Designated Workspace
Having a room in your home that can be an office is ideal but that’s not possible for everyone. If that isn’t possible for you try to avoid working in your bedroom and create an area, even if small, where you can focus on work.
This area should have the things you need for your job and things that can help make that job more efficient. You want to avoid needing to get up all the time to get the things you need.
Establish a Work Routine
With many disabilities, a routine can be hard. Days may not all be the same and if you have ADHD or other neurodivergence types your brain may not do well with a strict routine.
You will likely need to try many different routines to find the one that does work for you. If you like a strict routine then you can do something like time blocking and having everything scheduled. If you need more flexibility create habit stacks or something else that may work for you.
Set Boundaries with Family and Friends
Setting boundaries with family and friends is essential when working from home to minimize interruptions and distractions. It can be challenging for loved ones to understand that just because you’re at home doesn’t mean you’re available.
Communication is key – explain your work schedule and expectations, and ask them to respect your boundaries. If necessary, consider establishing physical boundaries like a closed office door or a designated workspace. Remember, boundaries help create a healthy work-life balance and increase productivity in the long run.
If two or more people in the home are working from home it can also be helpful if you both create similar work schedules if possible.
Setting your phone to do not disturb can also be helpful!
Find Helpful Productivity Tools and Apps
There are several productivity tools and apps that can help you stay focused and organized when working from home.
These include time-tracking apps like Toggl or RescueTime, project management tools like Asana or AirTable, and communication platforms like Slack or Zoom. Other tools like Grammarly can help improve your writing skills and ensure clear communication.
You can also use tools to help you avoid social media distractions like ScreenZen which you can use to lock you out of apps on your phone during work hours.
And there are also non-digital tools like planners and timers that can also help you with distractions and productivity.
With so many options available, it’s essential to find the tools and apps that work best for your specific needs and work style.
Take Breaks and Don’t Forget Self-Care
Burnout is a very real risk of all work but seems to impact people that work from home even more. When you are burned out it becomes even harder to avoid distractions.
Taking breaks is very important. Some find the Pomodoro method of working to help make sure you are taking breaks but not getting too distracted and not coming back to work.
The basic idea is working for an interval and then taking a short break. Using a timer helps you stick to this. 25 minutes of work with a short break is a common interval. 45 minutes of working and a 15-minute break is another good option.
Making sure to make the time for self-care is also helpful for preventing burnout. When you quit work for the day that can be a good time for a short self-care activity.
And be sure to not just work all of the time. You need a balance between your work and personal life!
