You can gain traffic and more readers by writing better blog posts with a few simple steps. Your blog posts will always be the most important part of your blog so make sure they stand out. This post is sponsored by Grammarly.
Want to know a secret? I’m dyslexic and hated writing growing up. Spell and reading were a struggle so why would I want to write?
No one expected me to be one to write for a living. I didn’t set out to be a writer. I started out doing web design and photography. Art was my thing. I also loved science and considered being a nurse.
Life is funny because I started my blog Retro Housewife Goes Green to share my thoughts, homemaking tips, and green living tips with friends. They often asked for suggestions and at that point, everyone had a personal blog but it was just for your friends and family.
Only a very few people were making money blogging at that point and it wasn’t even on my radar. I ended up friends with some other green bloggers and they were starting to make a little side income with their blogs and I thought I could do that too.
Now as you know I blog professionally and counting this blog I have four different blogs. I’ve learned to love to write as a way to share and teach others. Blogging is great because it’s conversational and that’s the kind of writing I enjoy.
I wanted to share my backstory with you because I wanted you to know, even if writing isn’t your strongest skill you can still blog. There are tools out there to help you and tips to keep you on track.
How to Write Blog Posts
Start With a Good Topic
You want to write about things you know. It doesn’t have to be something you come by naturally, sometimes it’s good to write about your struggles and what you find helps.
This post is a great example. The writing part of blogging wasn’t something I was naturally good at, I’ve had to work at it. This helps me understand my readers that may also have this issue.
Your topic should also help people. People like to read things that bring value to their life. Think about your topic and what value it will bring to the reader.
Use Good SEO Practices
SEO is a huge topic that requires more than I can share in this post but I want to share a few basics.
- Research your keyword(s) for Google and Pinterest.
- Use your keyword(s) in your title, header, and organically within your post.
- Keep the post updated if any information changes.

Edit, Edit, and Edit Some More
It doesn’t matter if you are great at writing or struggle as I do, you are going to make mistakes. It’s hard to proofread your own work because you know what you were trying to say and you may miss typos.
Even if you have someone else read it things can be missed. When I put out a product some of my blog friends proofread for me and each person catches different things and two of them are English majors!
I don’t want to bother others or pay for a proofreader for everyday blog posts so I use Grammarly. This app changed my life. I’m not exaggerating.
It’s a browser tool that you install on your browser and it works like spellcheck but better and it shows grammar errors as well. I also find that it’s better at fixing my spelling which can be so bad that spellcheck has no clue what I’m trying to say.
Even with Grammarly, you want to read over what you wrote at least a couple of times. Make sure you were clear and included everything you wanted to. But with Grammarly, you are sure to have better posts.

If you want to learn even more about contention creation check out the blogging course Content Creation 101. It’s by one of my favorite course creators Crystal Paine and it’s very affordable.
